Tamworth’s team of community wardens are now getting out and about on brand new bicycles, thanks to the ongoing generosity of Dave Owen Cycles.

The independent bicycle shop and leisure business, which is based in the activity centre in the Castle Grounds, has supported Tamworth’s community wardens by providing them with new bikes for several years. As soon as bicycles need replacing, they are returned to Dave Owen Cycles in exchange for brand new ones.

This latest donation has provided the community wardens with four brand new bikes, worth a total of £1,000, and means Dave Owen Cycles has now supplied around 20 new bicycles to the team as part of its ongoing support to community wardens over the years.

Jonny Paul, assistant manager at Dave Owen Cycles, said: “We’ve been going for about seven or eight years now and supporting the local community where we can is a key part of what we do. Tamworth’s community wardens do a great job for the community and we’re delighted to be able to support them in this way.”

Tamworth Community Warden Peter Watkins said: “We’re really grateful for this latest donation of bikes from Dave Owen Cycles. They have provided us with bicycles for several years now; donating new ones whenever they need replacing. Having bikes means we can patrol much larger areas of the town, including large parks, but without having to travel by car, which would make us much less visible and approachable if people wanted to talk to us. Our thanks go to Dave and his team – Jonny, Angelo and Steve – for their ongoing help and support.”

Dave Owen Cycles also manages the tennis courts and crazy golf in the Castle Grounds, as well as providing cycle hire and lessons.

The Dave Owen Cycles team are also supporting the town’s first ever Tamworth Cycle Festival which is a joint venture between a number of organisations taking place in the Castle Grounds on Saturday, June 30. (www.visittamworth.co.uk/tamworth-cycle-festival)

Tamworth’s Community Wardens – previously known as Street Wardens – are part of Tamworth Community Safety Partnership and have been patrolling the town’s streets since 2002, with the aim of helping to create a cleaner, greener and safer place to live.
