Luke Campbell wants to avenge his Yvan Mendy defeat before fighting for a world title or facing fellow Brit Anthony Crolla later on in the year.
The WBC has ordered an eliminator between the two lightweights, which will decide who is the No 1 challenger to current champion Mikey Garcia.
Garcia is expected face IBF holder Robert Easter Jr in a unification bout at the end of July, with Vasyl Lomachenko joining the mix with his win over Jorge Linares, but Campbell wants to deal with Mendy first and avenge the December 2015 defeat that saw him floored for the first time as a professional.
“It’s the fight I am looking for and the fight I want next and it’s been ordered by the WBC,” he exclusively told Sky Sports
“It is an eliminator but by the time it comes around it could possibly be for the full title, I’ve just got to wait and find out.
“Mendy’s always been on my list, for sure. I know he’s been winning and it will be a tough fight. He is a tough competitor, he’s strong, durable, a tough guy.
“I am now a completely different person and a different fighter all-round. I am 10 times better than I was when he beat me three-and-a-half years ago.
“I’m bigger, I’m wiser, my boxing ability is 10 times what it was back then. I didn’t really have a team around me then, I shouldn’t really have got in the ring that night, either.
“I’d had a virus that week, my body was aching all over, I was tight at the weight and I should’ve pulled out on Wednesday. I learned a very hard lesson, but it was one I didn’t need to have.”
Campbell wants two more fights before the end of the year, after beating Troy James in five rounds on the Tony Bellew vs David Haye 2 undercard.
The Olympic gold medallist knows the possible lightweight unifications could scupper his plan, but has made it clear if there is no world title chance, there is only one opponent he is interested in – Anthony Crolla.
“I believe the biggest domestic fight right now is me v Anthony Crolla,” he said.
“I think it’s a huge fight. I beat Mendy then see what is happening with the world titles but why not make me and Crolla for the back-end of the year?
“If the titles are all tied up, it is the next biggest fight out there for me and it is the biggest domestic fight out there.
“It would sell out the Manchester Arena and people will want to see it. I think everyone knows our styles gelling really well.”
