Celtic have been charged by UEFA after a fan ran onto their pitch and aimed a kick at Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe.

European football’s governing body has confirmed it has opened proceedings against the club for the incident that soured Tuesday night’s Champions League clash in Glasgow.

Celtic fan John Hatton has admitted invading the pitch and assaulting Mbappe by attempting to kick him, during the Champions League match at Celtic Park on Tuesday.

Hatton, 22, from Belfast, was granted bail at Glasgow Sheriff Court and sentence was deferred until October 11 for background reports. Hatton also pleaded guilty to behaviour likely to incite public disorder by approaching the player.

Sheriff Sukwinder Gill banned Hatton from every football ground in Scotland, England and Wales until sentencing.

Celtic have been charged with a count of “field invasion” and will have their case heard by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on October 19, a statement from the European governing body said.

PSG have also been charged after their fans were accused of breaking seats at Celtic Park and will have their matter addressed at the same hearing as Celtic.

Celtic were fined just over £20,000 by UEFA for crowd offences in their home Champions League qualifier against Linfield in July.

That was Celtic’s 11th punishment in six seasons relating to supporter misconduct during European ties, with over £160,000 in fines incurred over the same period, and Charlie Nicholas fears for his former club.

The Sky Sports pundit said: “I think Celtic have had five fines now for a political protest and everything else with the fans,

“The warning is that the next home game could be a closed-door event, so I’m really scared about what’s going to happen with the punishment for Celtic tonight.”

Police have confirmed that there were seven arrests in total at the game, four of whom were still in custody on Wednesday, 13 September.
