A “despicable” burglar who had sex with a corpse at a funeral parlour has been jailed for six years.
Kasim Khuram was high on drink and drugs when he carried out the “gratuitous” crime last November at a Co-op premises in Birmingham’s Great Barr area.
The 23-year-old previously pleaded guilty to sexual penetration of a body and also admitted breaking into the funeral home with the intention of stealing.
Birmingham Crown Court heard Khuram had been drinking vodka and was high on Mamba and PCP at the time.
Khuram from Aston, Birmingham, kicked down the front door before he stole jewellery and disturbed three bodies and nine coffins, including one which contained a baby.
The identity of the sex assault victim cannot be revealed for legal reasons but the court heard it was a woman, while another female was left “exposed”.
Tests revealed DNA belonging to Khuram had been found on the victim’s body.
Prosecutor Robert Price said a member of staff was called to the business at 1.40am, and found the female assault victim “had been removed from the coffin and was now on her back on the floor of the chapel”.
Mr Price said: “The coffin had been propped up against the wall.
“The coffin containing a male body had also been lifted and the lid left lying at a slant resting on the head of the (male’s) body.
“The body of another female had been turned over inside her coffin and was lying face down.”
Sentencing Khuram, judge Melbourne Inman QC told him: “The offences that you have committed offend all human sensitivity.
“I am not aware of, and nor have I been able to find, any similar case. It would be difficult to think of a greater deprivation of the dignity of the dead.”
Khuram was also ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years as part of his sentence.
