He has numerous awards, multiplatinum sales and is a part of the most successful band in history – but Sir Paul McCartney says he has now finally “made it” after being awarded a rare gold Blue Peter badge.

The Beatles singer has been given the honour for inspiring so many generations of people with his music, the children’s show said.

Blue Peter’s special gold badge is the programme’s highest award, given to people who have shown expertise in their field, are considered to be role models and who encourage and motivate children and young people.

Accepting the accolade, Sir Paul said: “That is beautiful, that’s a great badge. I will wear it with great pride. Yes! I made it!”

Asked what advice he would give to young people who want to be musicians and songwriters, he said: “The only advice really is to do it… a lot.

“I have a songwriting class and the first thing I say to them is, ‘Look, I don’t really know how to do this’, and at first they kind of look at me, but when you think about it there is no formula.

“I know how to write one of my songs but I can’t say, ‘You do it that way’, because it’s a very personal thing. So the advice really is to just do whatever it is you’re doing… a lot!”

McCartney follows in the footsteps of Lord Of The Rings director Peter Jackson, who received the award in December. Jackson is currently working on a Beatles documentary based on previously unseen footage of the recording of their final studio album, Let It Be.

Other previous gold badge recipients include the Queen, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Sir David Attenborough, JK Rowling, Steven Spielberg, Mary Berry, David Beckham, Ed Sheeran and Madonna.

Blue Peter editor Ewan Vinnicombe said: “Sir Paul McCartney has inspired generations of Blue Peter viewers to love music and be creative – a core value of Blue Peter.

“I’m thrilled that we have been able to honour the legend that is Sir Paul with our highest accolade – a gold badge.”

Blue Peter’s famous blue badges are awarded to fans who appear on the show or who send in interesting letters, stories, pictures, poems, or ideas for the programme.

The show also has several other badges – including green for the environment, purple for reviews of an episode and orange for winning a Blue Peter competition.

Gold badges are “very rare indeed”, with only a few awarded for “exceptional circumstances for outstanding achievements”.

Fans can see Sir Paul receiving his badge on Blue Peter on Thursday.
